Class Task: Writing - Six Words Stories, Episode 3 - Revenge of the Six

Everybody dislikes Six Word Stories.

10. The future world will be... a world where imagination comes true.
11. The past was... pretty decent, can't complain too much.

Always mind the gap when getting off the train.

Unit 29: Music Video Production - Music Video Pitch

It's finally time, baby. I'm making an actual video for college work! Here's the pitch:

Music Video Pitch
            Artist: Pendulum    Song: Blood Sugar
Primary Audience: Teenagers    Secondary Audience(s): Young Adults
Length: 5:00
The song is very slow to start with, and it turns into a faster song as it goes on. I feel that this can be reflected accurately in a video, as other songs would make sure to slow down the shot speed and variety of shots during a slower part of the song, choosing instead to use long shots. Once the song speeds up, it gets very fast and wild, which could be shown in a video by using a variety of shots to reflect this change of pace. In order to fit with the speed of the song, it would need to change pace often, keeping people interested in the variety of shots and angles used. The issue with the song is that there are no real lyrics other than a man talking briefly to the audience about the kind of music it is, which could not be reflected accurately in a portrayal of an artist as it doesn’t give an image to go off of.
Because of this, I feel it would be appropriate if the video took place during a concert by the artist, giving it a promotion of the artist and them playing their music instead of them singing, as is shown typically in rock videos that promote the artist instead of this kind of musical style, but it would work in a promotional way to show the artist in action. I feel like a lot of the action would, however, follow a person backstage and what they’re doing as opposed to focusing solely on the band. This would give it a lower budget as there would be fewer scenes with a lot of people in, but there would be enough scenes revolving around a different person to give a sense of what is happening. The song is called “Blood Sugar”, but never references what it is, and the rapidly changing tempo and beat of the song reflects that of a person potentially fading in and out of consciousness. Pendulum as a group generally seem to promote messages in their videos, with the video for ‘Propane Nightmares’ showing a message against cults and suicide and ‘The Other Side’ showing a person who appears to be losing his mind or, potentially, being on drugs, which is portrayed as frightening for him, and as being negative. The idea for my video was that a person fading in and out of consciousness would likely be on drugs himself, and that it would be scary (this was an idea I had before seeing the other video), and that this was the explanation for what “Blood Sugar” is. This would fit the image and style of the group and would help promote a message against drugs, as well as promoting the artist, and give the video a lot of freedom for creative and interesting ideas, as well as being able to be something people will remembers. For example, it would give a reason to include tilted camera angles and rapidly changing shots to disorientate people and would show creativity in the ways it can be filmed, to make it more open and interesting for a crew and for an audience.

Video Plan
The band are shown going onto a stage. Blinding lights are seen and they begin playing the song. As the slow part goes on, we see a man walking down to the bathroom stalls and pouring a red floury substance onto the sink. We see the band again speaking the final line of the spoken part, before the musical part begins and the man is seeing exiting the bathroom and hallucinations begin. The camera shifts to a variety of angles and shots to disorient the viewer and cause confusion. It rapidly changes between shots in different colours and showing a variety of unusual events (with any makeup teams making people look out of place). When the voice speaks, it shows people talking to this, but as it continues it desyncs from their mouths to show confusion to the main person.
Design
Overall the look will consist of reds and blues that are very noticeable with changing lights to show that it works as a concert setting. A lot of it will take place backstage or outside of the crowded areas, in a fairly normal looking area or in a brick location with stands that are mostly empty (as people are at the concert location). It still has a lot of red colours present and some blue colours shown, but the characters will look fairly standard. Most people will be dressed in hoodies or t-shirts and jeans, but the main character that the video primarily follows will look tired, and he’ll be dressed similarly to the person in ‘The Vaccines’ video for 20/20, in a jacket and jeans with a patterned shirt with an unusual haircut and looking fairly out of place.

The concert would look fairly normal and would only be shown from far off angles (except for the occasional close-up of the artists) to keep it simple, and would look similar to this:

Largely consisting of long shots, but focusing primarily on the person the video revolves around and showing the empty areas of the building, instead to give a feeling that this person is unusual.
Budget Constraints
Naturally, as a college project it won’t have a large budget with millions of pounds to spend on the video, so there will have to be constraints. One large constraint is the amount of people, as trying to make it look like a concert with only a few actors will be very difficult to achieve, causing the reason for the video to focus very little on the concert environment and use it only to show the artist and the location, using far off shots of any audience and disorienting it to make it seem different, such as choosing to only show small parts of it or using different lighting to distract the eyes from the amount of people. The other issue would be with the location itself, which also causes the reason why a lot of the video focuses on locations that don’t necessarily have to be part of the building and can be shot anywhere, as it would make it easier to shoot and cheaper to create without having to spend a lot of money and a large amount of time trying to create it.
Setting
Post-2000’s in a concert, bright lights and open setting, as well as having closed environments and corridors in certain areas, giving a lot of chances for longer shots as well as close-ups.
Camera
Dutch Angles, Long Shots, Wide Shots, POV Shots,
Over the Shoulder Shots, Mid Shots, Close-Ups, Extreme Close-Ups

Bet that was a fun read. I'm probably missing something, but I intend to wing it to an extent to bring it to perfection. Wish me luck.
