Unit 31: Social Action and Community Media - Social Action Film

This film was uploaded to YouTube via the Ufilms Productions channel. It was submitted to the Cut Films contest, and promotes an anti-smoking campaign.

My role for this project was as editor. I wasn't involved in the pre-production at all because of this, and so the paperwork and arrangements were all made by other team members. I wasn't necessary for this part due to my involvement as boom and editor, and so I wasn't involved in planning it. Despite this, I can still see how planning affected the final product, as it had to be planned on location especially, as well as on the actors, crew and equipment, making sure to communicate openly with all participants to make them aware of the message, coordinating all of the personnel and resources and scheduling in the production and post-production time.

There was consideration of techniques and devices related to the medium of factual advertising for social action. Typically, they take darker tones that are simple to interpret, they get across their straight-forward and easy to understand message in a simple to understand way so as to make people desire to take the message seriously, as the message of a social action piece is serious. The way to do this is to make it non-jokey, using themes found in more adult content and aiming it towards younger people to make them steer away from the subject so as to avoid doing what the advertisement is about. It is apparent that this piece was produced with using themes of smoking being the same as suicide to deter people from smoking at risk of their lives.
